VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol, also known as IP Telephony is the transmission of voice over internet protocol instead of traditional telephone networks. The original design of the protocol was purely for data transfer but now in day to day developments we've scene a flux in the increase in different uses of the Web, offering new and innovative ways of communing online.
A voice signal from a Voice over IP phone (or an older phone connected through a suitable VoIP adapter) is passed through a VOIP device that converts the regular telephone voice signal into a digital one so it can use one of the many broadband internet connection where it travels to the destination equipment. The digital signal is then converted back to the original voice call.
In other words, when the originator calls a number the Voice over IP (VoIP) phone logs on to the routing server – which looks up the destination IP number and locates its directory on the world wide web and send the signal with ease and speed as though it were on a mobile network.
All in all a very clever and innovative concept that is seeing more and more use.
