The Hypodermic Needle Theory

The Hypodermic needle theory, the theory dates back the 1940's and has been a key and controversial subject and theory within the media and government establishments. The theory states that the media of the world is so suggestive that it can govern the different routes taken and products bought in life very easily when done so properly to bring the desired affect to the target audiences. Mass media is a controller of the thoughts of masses in different parts of the world, even the country. Political groups, parties and those in the world seeking followers use this theory to suggestive degrees sometimes effectively deceiving the mass public about their aims and renouncing on their what were thought to be future policies.
It is a theory used by groups to control and a theory used by media analysts to understand.

Response to Star Wars

Star Wars has derived from the science fiction genre, as a futuristic fantasy it prides itself on on very early adaptations in CGI (computer generated imagery), being the first to really capture such a vast audience with the amazing "lightsabers" and special effects. From the now well explored science fiction film genre we can expect natural human fantasy's, extremely beautiful or ugly woman, magic or unreal perceptions of physics, there are endless possibilities to this genre especially with the new advanced uses of special effects software and all sorts of new inspirational technologies. Star Wars meets this genre very clearly with the most amazing ideas for the fantasy, an inspiration to many writers and film makers, the series of films all contain human fantasy's about physics and it can act, shown through the use of "the force", which can magically determine your winning of a battle between good and evil. There is only one female character in the whole series of Star Wars and she just happens to be very attractive, which seems to suit the geeky goers of this series of films. Space travel, oh the wonderful world of space travel, another fantasy for all the geeks in fact anyone just in particular the geeks. When Star was managed to navigate itself from one platform to another, from a film series to a game series it has astounded everyone with the amount of joy it has provided people with when playing it on their consoles. I remember playing the Star Wars series of game and it provided so much fun. But how has the genre changed jumping from these to platforms for media, jumping into the interactive scene has changed the points and positions you view the story from, playing as different characters involving yourself in different scenes and perspectives. The genre changes, bringing in more action and a bit less following of the storyline, but the games tend to involve cut scenes from the film though not all of the Star Wars games do, so that enhances the story telling quite allot when you have finished your objective or mission in the game. The reasoning behind the game becomes allot more about action is because the game is purely based around battling and attempting to kill the opposition because that is all the game can let you do, though some of the Star Wars games let you try and solve puzzles and things alike.
The significance of the narrative and meaning behind Star Wars, the underlying structure of Star Wars is held together by the good versus evil keystone of many films, tackling audiences morals making people look into themselves making self reflection allot more interesting for the viewers. Within the story we have the good, which is the Jedi and the bad, which is the Sith, they both work to battle each other through out the galaxy, attacking one another for various reasons. Corruption within the politics of the film brings the senate to fall into the hands of the Sith creating anarchy yet still Sith rule. Throughout the film you can see relevance to the cliché story structure of the heroes journey, Anikan Skywalker not set into an ordinary world but still set into a world is called to adventure by the Jedi due to his powers of the force that are picked up in his blood properties, due to the fact that he misses his mother he does not wish to accept the call but at the same time he is mentored by the Que gon and Obi won. He is then put to the test in his abilities with the force when he has to battle it out in a highly dangerous podrace. So it clearly does have relevance to the heroes journey though it is not Anikan that turns out to be a hero, it is his son which turns out to be the hero. This is just what makes the story so epic and manages to lengthen it out to an amazing series of films. From watching Star Wars audiences may feel the need to an active interest in politics and take a second look at how meaningful the world of good and evil can really be, also their perceptions on immorality and morality.
The story to Star Wars represents types and encourages to take sympathy on the side of the Jedi, for they are siding with the innocents constantly and are staying true to the traditional ways of the Jedi, whereas the other type in the film of which there are two are mercilessly killing innocent people targeting races that may affect their domination of the galaxy. There are "clones" within the film but they are divided between the Sith and Jedi, they are seen as a minority that come under the idea of metaphorically speaking nationalities within a war between two super nations. The clones trying to pick their sides represents the politics of the film and how good can prevail against the forces of evil. The minority groups are not represented with having pivotal roles within the story but can help and feature in certain battles which increase much more interest to eccentricity of the film, also improving on the amount of merchandise that can be produced, improving the overall net profit. With all these different groups you would think there would be some diversity between the male and female population but the film disappoints with there being only one female character that is the love of the once heroic but end resulting main villain of the films. Typically the female character is very attractive and she certainly is in the series whereas the men play the main roles and feature most of the dialogue within the films. Unfortunately I feel there are sense of prejudices within the film, maybe its because it was when the film series started or just the feelings of the creator "George Lucas", its not nice hear it, disgustingly the film only features one black character "Mace Windu" and only one female which appear in an uncomfortably token way, maybe these were the views of the writers but it is one factor about the film I do not like.

Jobs In Interactive Media

In this post I explain my top three interactive media jobs.

Developer

I believe being a developer within the industry would by far be the most interesting, and the most important to the workings of any interactive product. This is where all the intuitiveness behind the inner-workings of a product comes into play. Though you may not be at the highest rank of the productions job roles, this would for-fill me far more than sitting at a desk and ordering people around.
As a developer it would be you position to host your own skill in the use of mark-up languages, authoring tools and scripting languages to create your product. The key skills that any developer should have under their belt is a good knowledge of programming and its principles, knowledge of mark-up languages and scripting, the ability to self study and to discipline yourself in the process.

Designer

Being a designer would be fun because you would get to create the main feel and look of the product, what your role as designer entails is effected massively by the size of and type of company or team is working on the product. It is the designers obligation to stay aware of the tools and technologies being used to build the product and in his or her interest to stay aware of what these technologies can and cannot do. Within smaller companies this job can be quite likely to overlap with the developers role, because I like the sound of both of these jobs I see this job could be rather suiting. As a designer it is your place to create separate visuals within the product, say for different layers and sections of a website, its very important to understand how visual elements may interact with one another for the user, and how the user may feel when trying to navigate or use an interactive product, suggestiveness and things alike.

Programmer

This job to me seems to be the most technical part of creating any interactive product, for without this role in place none of the functions of the product could ever have been accomplished. As a programmer it is your place to provide the product with its functionality, programme individual software for the product and devise your own working systems and databases. You would have to create your own software as part of the interactive media product and if it were for web based application use the software have to be implemented so that it could run from the server itself so that it could be constantly accessed. It is usually the job of someone with past experience working with Java or C++, and for certain web use PHP and or Perl and mark-up languages.

But after reviewing all the roles of these products I am not entirely sure of which I would pick....so lets review the salaries.

The below salaries have been obtained from the website "www.itjobswatch.co.uk"

As a developer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £40,000, but this can range from £70,000 or even more.

As a designer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £36,000, but this can range from £60,000 or even more.

As a programmer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £37,500, but this can range from £62,500 or even more.

These salaries and trends tend to change rapidly and as a result you can never be too sure what the future holds in terms of income, you have to strive to become top of your game.

Ethics of Intellectual Property and Copyright

What is Copyright? Copyright is the right to the total control over something created by one, it awards the rights of total control to the creator, the person with the control of the copyright on a product has the choice for allowing recreation of the product and alternations to the products elements. Copyright just states that adaptation, copying and distribution remains in total control of the author/creator.
There are three moral rights protected by the Copyright Act, they are as follows:
  • The right to attribution
This is the to be identified as the creator of the work and product the creator has produced, where any of the authors work is to be distributed and used for another persons gain, it is the law that the author must be recognized under the copyright act.
  • The right of integrity
The right to show that any of the work produced is not to be under alternations or editing of elements, for the work likely to be passed off as someone else's work. Artists and musicians may allow segments of their works to be shown by others but the full works of a product produced is far more sensitive.
  • The right to no false attribution
This means that one or a company does not have the right to produce something/product and falsely attribute the authoring of the product to another person or author, this is due to the fact that this could result in the discrediting of an author with work that would not be to there standard or style. Not only that, the author the work would be being falsely accredited may not feel it fair for the work to be accredited to them.

So how might it affect those in the interactive media industry?

This creates fairness and equality within the media industry, stopping companies or persons from being abused, extorted or illegally falsely identified. The end result is that without consent of the author or creator no product/products maybe used or represented with possibility of financial gain.

Is Illegal Downloading Morally Right or Wrong?

There is much controversy over whether or not the illegal downloading everybody participates in is morally wrong, though I am one of those participating in these acts of piracy I do not deem it morally right. If I am acting under the knowledge that the producer or author I am effectively stealing from is under financial pressure or to a disadvantage due to my downloading, then I feel a sense of guilt and tend not to opt for downloading. This is a rarity though for most the products we see and all the products we download are already at a huge financial status. It is morally wrong but in my mind exceptions can be made for the leaking of government documents and information the public should not be kept from.

Creative Commons

The idea behind Creative Commons or CC is to bring education and acknowledgement to a higher level using the vast open space of the internet. CC supports the uses of different materials on the internet that are already under copyright law so that others can use the materials for the development of their knowledge.
The picture to the left is a print screen capture of Google searches usage rights relating to Creative Commons, the advanced search allows me to search for materials that come under "CC" rights. click the picture to see a full size.

I sourced from Google search under Creative Commons filter for "Bose" the headphone/speaker company, I tried to search for an image. But in when i made an attempt to copy the image in order to represent it in this blog post I was redirected to this CC licence page. see below:
Deed/Licence 2.0 right to attribution

What could total non-existence of copyright result in?

If the world had no copyright laws or rights then it is quite likely that we would be living in a far more corrupt society than it is now, though some of the rich and wealthy may not be rich some of them could be result in being even more rich and abusing the freedom far more. The world in the media would have to rely on every-bodies trust for the working of anarchy and trust in every-bodies moral views, unfortunately we know that this is simply impossible when we see the corruption today. Though it would be very interesting for the subject to be experimented with, it should be tried and tested is what I believe.
