Graphics Tablet Project - update

Ashley's and I's Project has finished and is in my opinion is "well under scratch", unfortunately we have produced a simple video to hopefully reach the pass grade.

Bone Tool AS3

In my flash class today I followed a tutorial demonstrating the working of the bone tool in AS3 flash, so far I have learnt how to construct a body with several joins with the bone tool. You can use this tool to easily create an animated body animation quite easily.
Julian has his own YouTube channel for hosting tutorials for programs within the adobe suite. With this knowledge it could put me towards making my own animation with talking and moving characters, come to think of it, could this tool have been implemented in WCK Box 2D.

DragN'Drop Game-Steady Progress

The game has been making steady progress, so far I have found a suitable engine for supplying an element of physics within flash when objects are static or dynamic in runtime. The name of this engine is Box2D and has been written with the use of flash action script 3.0 and C++ scripting. Today I've been working on my proposal to the game. More and more ideas are developing, making more space for work, well/we'll see how it goes.

Tims great lesson taught me the importance of see below

Today was about understanding the importance of specifying the parameters of your briefs and proposals within the industry, knowing what is expected of you by the client is extremely important and if a deadline is not met how crushing this could be to your name and status within the competition of professionals in the media industry. As an amateur student it is important to know that professional work to come in the future will not be so forgiving, the industry has a standard and if you don’t meet it, well, you are not in the industry. This is why it is so important to put all your effort into your work even if it isn’t working as a professional. Be happy to work for free as long as it isn’t taking any money off of you then it is good experience at the end of the day, getting your name out there for more customers eventually referring you as a professional. If you are able to except the work on offer but you don’t believe you are able to match the standards expected of you, get in a professional to do the work for you showing you the ropes so you know how he or she went about completing the work, just give all the money and profits that would have otherwise gone to you, you don’t want to be taking work from professionals when you are doing a terrible job at their work. The basis of the average contractual agreement within the media industry establishes the product being promoted, the audience the product to be created is intended for and the specified budget for the product. As a student  or an amateur it is important to understand that you have no real rights in the market and you don’t control the game, do not go taking professionals work away, if it’s a market you want to be considered in or work in don’t go screwing it up. As a real professional doing freelance work you are free to specify your own hourly rate defining it on how qualified you really are, the hourly rate can be £30 to £90 and so on, sounds Ludacris but if your good enough you are good enough. The different demographics that come into the defining of media products audiences are: culture, age, sex and sexuality and the different grades in social grading ranging from A-E.

Thank you and babye!

Creating MovieClips within Flash and importing from the library

In my lesson with Jules today I've learnt how to create MovieClips purely within action-script and how to import elements such as graphics/bitmaps and MovieClips straight from the library into a blank stage. This has improved my knowledge and confidence within action-script I'm sure there will be many more lessons that went as good this one did to come.

Reviewing Drag and Drop based Flash games

Purpose of this document is to review and analyse “DragNDrop” based flash games.
“Positional” Review
Author-Vector Games
I enjoyed playing this game though I found it very frustrating at times, due to the fact of tediousness trying to maintain the sprites in a static state. The purpose of the game is to create structures that the games asks of you to create, the structure has to hold and stay in the desired state for 5 seconds otherwise the positioning of the objects you are building with have to be realligned into their appropriate positions. Different shaped objects are given for you to build with, they consist of triangles, circle and many squares of different lengths and widths. The game gives you a 3minute elapsed time before you’ve ran out of time for that level, otherwise its gameover. As far as flash game categories go; this comes under the physics games flash category, though you could argue it was also puzzle.
“Boneless” Review
Author-Addicting Games             http://www.addictinggames.com/life-style-games/bonelessgirl.jsp
This game isnt so much a game in the sense that you have a challenge, the fun you have playing the game is in dragging and dropping an animated purely by your actions doll. The fun is in imagining how much that would really hurt in real life, instead you get to invisage the punishment in flash player. The game works by generating random circular objects throughout the never ending fall the doll is taking, you just get to sit back and watch her get hurt untill she get stuck or ou want to hurt even more, unfortunate there is no other level of interaction in game, all in all a very fun game. In accordance with the author this come under the game category of life and style games, though its his/her interprutation.
“Gravity Master” Review
Author-Astro75                Music-Reasoner               http://www.gravitymaster.net
This game is brilliant for a flash game and offers allot of fun, cleverly using the drag and drop commands to write the ability draw physical shape withing the game. The aim of the game is to collect all goal/target/balls that are throughout the levels, you have different platforms and obstacles you have to work your ball/sprite across. This would come under the puzzle or logic category for you really do have to think about what you are going to o to complete the level you are playing, use your brain power! The game is quite a professional standard as far as little flash games go, I feel learning how to create these physics based games would be very interesting this has been far the most fun one I have played so far, you best go and test it out! :)

The Hypodermic Needle Theory

The Hypodermic needle theory, the theory dates back the 1940's and has been a key and controversial subject and theory within the media and government establishments. The theory states that the media of the world is so suggestive that it can govern the different routes taken and products bought in life very easily when done so properly to bring the desired affect to the target audiences. Mass media is a controller of the thoughts of masses in different parts of the world, even the country. Political groups, parties and those in the world seeking followers use this theory to suggestive degrees sometimes effectively deceiving the mass public about their aims and renouncing on their what were thought to be future policies.
It is a theory used by groups to control and a theory used by media analysts to understand.

Response to Star Wars

Star Wars has derived from the science fiction genre, as a futuristic fantasy it prides itself on on very early adaptations in CGI (computer generated imagery), being the first to really capture such a vast audience with the amazing "lightsabers" and special effects. From the now well explored science fiction film genre we can expect natural human fantasy's, extremely beautiful or ugly woman, magic or unreal perceptions of physics, there are endless possibilities to this genre especially with the new advanced uses of special effects software and all sorts of new inspirational technologies. Star Wars meets this genre very clearly with the most amazing ideas for the fantasy, an inspiration to many writers and film makers, the series of films all contain human fantasy's about physics and it can act, shown through the use of "the force", which can magically determine your winning of a battle between good and evil. There is only one female character in the whole series of Star Wars and she just happens to be very attractive, which seems to suit the geeky goers of this series of films. Space travel, oh the wonderful world of space travel, another fantasy for all the geeks in fact anyone just in particular the geeks. When Star was managed to navigate itself from one platform to another, from a film series to a game series it has astounded everyone with the amount of joy it has provided people with when playing it on their consoles. I remember playing the Star Wars series of game and it provided so much fun. But how has the genre changed jumping from these to platforms for media, jumping into the interactive scene has changed the points and positions you view the story from, playing as different characters involving yourself in different scenes and perspectives. The genre changes, bringing in more action and a bit less following of the storyline, but the games tend to involve cut scenes from the film though not all of the Star Wars games do, so that enhances the story telling quite allot when you have finished your objective or mission in the game. The reasoning behind the game becomes allot more about action is because the game is purely based around battling and attempting to kill the opposition because that is all the game can let you do, though some of the Star Wars games let you try and solve puzzles and things alike.
The significance of the narrative and meaning behind Star Wars, the underlying structure of Star Wars is held together by the good versus evil keystone of many films, tackling audiences morals making people look into themselves making self reflection allot more interesting for the viewers. Within the story we have the good, which is the Jedi and the bad, which is the Sith, they both work to battle each other through out the galaxy, attacking one another for various reasons. Corruption within the politics of the film brings the senate to fall into the hands of the Sith creating anarchy yet still Sith rule. Throughout the film you can see relevance to the cliché story structure of the heroes journey, Anikan Skywalker not set into an ordinary world but still set into a world is called to adventure by the Jedi due to his powers of the force that are picked up in his blood properties, due to the fact that he misses his mother he does not wish to accept the call but at the same time he is mentored by the Que gon and Obi won. He is then put to the test in his abilities with the force when he has to battle it out in a highly dangerous podrace. So it clearly does have relevance to the heroes journey though it is not Anikan that turns out to be a hero, it is his son which turns out to be the hero. This is just what makes the story so epic and manages to lengthen it out to an amazing series of films. From watching Star Wars audiences may feel the need to an active interest in politics and take a second look at how meaningful the world of good and evil can really be, also their perceptions on immorality and morality.
The story to Star Wars represents types and encourages to take sympathy on the side of the Jedi, for they are siding with the innocents constantly and are staying true to the traditional ways of the Jedi, whereas the other type in the film of which there are two are mercilessly killing innocent people targeting races that may affect their domination of the galaxy. There are "clones" within the film but they are divided between the Sith and Jedi, they are seen as a minority that come under the idea of metaphorically speaking nationalities within a war between two super nations. The clones trying to pick their sides represents the politics of the film and how good can prevail against the forces of evil. The minority groups are not represented with having pivotal roles within the story but can help and feature in certain battles which increase much more interest to eccentricity of the film, also improving on the amount of merchandise that can be produced, improving the overall net profit. With all these different groups you would think there would be some diversity between the male and female population but the film disappoints with there being only one female character that is the love of the once heroic but end resulting main villain of the films. Typically the female character is very attractive and she certainly is in the series whereas the men play the main roles and feature most of the dialogue within the films. Unfortunately I feel there are sense of prejudices within the film, maybe its because it was when the film series started or just the feelings of the creator "George Lucas", its not nice hear it, disgustingly the film only features one black character "Mace Windu" and only one female which appear in an uncomfortably token way, maybe these were the views of the writers but it is one factor about the film I do not like.

Jobs In Interactive Media

In this post I explain my top three interactive media jobs.

Developer

I believe being a developer within the industry would by far be the most interesting, and the most important to the workings of any interactive product. This is where all the intuitiveness behind the inner-workings of a product comes into play. Though you may not be at the highest rank of the productions job roles, this would for-fill me far more than sitting at a desk and ordering people around.
As a developer it would be you position to host your own skill in the use of mark-up languages, authoring tools and scripting languages to create your product. The key skills that any developer should have under their belt is a good knowledge of programming and its principles, knowledge of mark-up languages and scripting, the ability to self study and to discipline yourself in the process.

Designer

Being a designer would be fun because you would get to create the main feel and look of the product, what your role as designer entails is effected massively by the size of and type of company or team is working on the product. It is the designers obligation to stay aware of the tools and technologies being used to build the product and in his or her interest to stay aware of what these technologies can and cannot do. Within smaller companies this job can be quite likely to overlap with the developers role, because I like the sound of both of these jobs I see this job could be rather suiting. As a designer it is your place to create separate visuals within the product, say for different layers and sections of a website, its very important to understand how visual elements may interact with one another for the user, and how the user may feel when trying to navigate or use an interactive product, suggestiveness and things alike.

Programmer

This job to me seems to be the most technical part of creating any interactive product, for without this role in place none of the functions of the product could ever have been accomplished. As a programmer it is your place to provide the product with its functionality, programme individual software for the product and devise your own working systems and databases. You would have to create your own software as part of the interactive media product and if it were for web based application use the software have to be implemented so that it could run from the server itself so that it could be constantly accessed. It is usually the job of someone with past experience working with Java or C++, and for certain web use PHP and or Perl and mark-up languages.

But after reviewing all the roles of these products I am not entirely sure of which I would pick....so lets review the salaries.

The below salaries have been obtained from the website "www.itjobswatch.co.uk"

As a developer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £40,000, but this can range from £70,000 or even more.

As a designer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £36,000, but this can range from £60,000 or even more.

As a programmer in the interactive media industry you are likely to see around on average ( a quoted salary) £37,500, but this can range from £62,500 or even more.

These salaries and trends tend to change rapidly and as a result you can never be too sure what the future holds in terms of income, you have to strive to become top of your game.

Ethics of Intellectual Property and Copyright

What is Copyright? Copyright is the right to the total control over something created by one, it awards the rights of total control to the creator, the person with the control of the copyright on a product has the choice for allowing recreation of the product and alternations to the products elements. Copyright just states that adaptation, copying and distribution remains in total control of the author/creator.
There are three moral rights protected by the Copyright Act, they are as follows:
  • The right to attribution
This is the to be identified as the creator of the work and product the creator has produced, where any of the authors work is to be distributed and used for another persons gain, it is the law that the author must be recognized under the copyright act.
  • The right of integrity
The right to show that any of the work produced is not to be under alternations or editing of elements, for the work likely to be passed off as someone else's work. Artists and musicians may allow segments of their works to be shown by others but the full works of a product produced is far more sensitive.
  • The right to no false attribution
This means that one or a company does not have the right to produce something/product and falsely attribute the authoring of the product to another person or author, this is due to the fact that this could result in the discrediting of an author with work that would not be to there standard or style. Not only that, the author the work would be being falsely accredited may not feel it fair for the work to be accredited to them.

So how might it affect those in the interactive media industry?

This creates fairness and equality within the media industry, stopping companies or persons from being abused, extorted or illegally falsely identified. The end result is that without consent of the author or creator no product/products maybe used or represented with possibility of financial gain.

Is Illegal Downloading Morally Right or Wrong?

There is much controversy over whether or not the illegal downloading everybody participates in is morally wrong, though I am one of those participating in these acts of piracy I do not deem it morally right. If I am acting under the knowledge that the producer or author I am effectively stealing from is under financial pressure or to a disadvantage due to my downloading, then I feel a sense of guilt and tend not to opt for downloading. This is a rarity though for most the products we see and all the products we download are already at a huge financial status. It is morally wrong but in my mind exceptions can be made for the leaking of government documents and information the public should not be kept from.

Creative Commons

The idea behind Creative Commons or CC is to bring education and acknowledgement to a higher level using the vast open space of the internet. CC supports the uses of different materials on the internet that are already under copyright law so that others can use the materials for the development of their knowledge.
The picture to the left is a print screen capture of Google searches usage rights relating to Creative Commons, the advanced search allows me to search for materials that come under "CC" rights. click the picture to see a full size.

I sourced from Google search under Creative Commons filter for "Bose" the headphone/speaker company, I tried to search for an image. But in when i made an attempt to copy the image in order to represent it in this blog post I was redirected to this CC licence page. see below:
Deed/Licence 2.0 right to attribution
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en

What could total non-existence of copyright result in?

If the world had no copyright laws or rights then it is quite likely that we would be living in a far more corrupt society than it is now, though some of the rich and wealthy may not be rich some of them could be result in being even more rich and abusing the freedom far more. The world in the media would have to rely on every-bodies trust for the working of anarchy and trust in every-bodies moral views, unfortunately we know that this is simply impossible when we see the corruption today. Though it would be very interesting for the subject to be experimented with, it should be tried and tested is what I believe.

Please feel free to express your views on any of the views acknowledged in this blog post!

Privacy

Cyberspace (our right to free internet space) is a place for traditional non-censorship, it offers us no space for privacy and allot of space for publishing of what would have been unknown materials, that would otherwise be kept hidden, never having the possibility of reaching the media. There is now at its highest point controversy over the rights to the publishing of forbidden or deemed by the government classified materials online, that are under law supposed to be kept from the public view.

It is only recently that the internet and networks are being penalized for its social media apparently breaching the "modern" privacy act. The act is allowing celebrities and those of a higher status and higher payroll to go to court and apply for "Super Injunctions", disgustingly many of these people are getting away with this. The injunction says that you cannot talk about the injunction and that you cannot tell anyone of the knowledge of there even being any injunction, complete gagging. Recently Ryan Giggs the famous footballer imposed a super injunction, I can only write or speak of this lawfully now due to the fact that parliament have made this visible to the public, which was inevitable due to the fact that it was posted all over the internet, in particular "Twitter", now the culprit behind posting the knowledge of the injunction is facing prosecution, what is the world coming to, our last free space for non-censorship is being more and more effected by our laws and government propaganda everyday.

If we look at how the far eastern countries govern the rights to freedom of information, its not easy to agree with the governments policies on keeping the citizens out of view of what they would deem sensitive information, I personally find it disgusting how so much of the internet and online information can be censored. In North Korea, Kim Jong-Il the infamous madman, engaging himself in terrorist activities against his own civilians, has taken censorship and the neglect of any rights to freedom of information to the extreme. Millions of people are effected by this issue, it is this that proves to me that freedom of speech should be seen as a global issue, and that clearly the rights to freedom of information over-weigh the rights to privacy.
Please feel free to post your own comments on the issue.

Savage is needed at Radipole

For my self-initiated work with one of my college lecturers, Ross, I am composing a small advert-like sequence of Radipole Skate park and why it should be and how easy it would be to have improved on the original. This is a pretend company but there's no reason why it shouldn't make a difference, and maybe even help bring in funding for the skate park, when so much money has been spent on the Dorchester and Portland Skate Parks.

I am composing this piece/message in "Adobe After Effects", this proves a great program for putting these kinds of pieces together.

More updates will reach this blog so stay tuned :

Feedback on my college website upon its completion, results may confer more adjustments for republishing??

Now that I have completed my website I am now seeking feedback to better it, and better understand the aesthetics when creating a successful website. I can already see a few major faults within the site, this feedback will likely pickup on these.

Ashley Churchill: This website is pretty cool. it looks very stylish and the button design(s) is a great idea. My only concerns though are the fact that the menu is still accessible when browsing in the sub-menus (e.g. you can click on the main menu buttons from the bottom of the downloads menu, as well as between selecting images if you're quick enough!) besides that, it's a great website.

Straight away Ashley has picked up on one of my major faults, time for some major revision on the site. Very useful feedback :)

Tom Taylor: The layers need to be sorted out but other than that it is very professional. I like the way that all the pages come up, and the transitions.

Louis Reed: No major faults noticeable apart from the one already mentioned, a slight bug with the image gallery, but the overall aspect of the website feels slick and robust. The masked homepage runs smoothly and appeals to the eye.

My feelings about the seriousness of these faults have been reaffirmed, I will no go off and attempt to fix these problems, many thanks to those of you offering feedback.

Research Assignment

All media companies nowadays take an in depth look into the targeting and interests of the audiences, trying to find out what they are interested in, what platforms for multiple media uses are they interested in, whether they are into some medias more than others. Target audiences could be into interactive Medias more than sit back and take in medias, for instance they would rather sit down and play a game creating their own outcome or sit down and watch a film where the story has already been set out. This research is very important to the companies as they wish to meet a wider audience as they can with their possibly multimedia products. Many companies make it big in one form of media and then feel they have done well enough to expand into another media or multiple Medias, take “Star Wars” for example, they started out purely as a one-off film acting as a kind of pretend serial drama aired on a Saturday afternoon, after audiences had enjoyed and taken an interest in the broadcast further development went into the making of other films and further story lines, that is why the “Star Wars” series started at episode four, from then on there was a great expansion into the film production for the company.

The main use of market research for companies is to allow the company and market to grow, gaining knowledge of the target demographic for adaptations to their products, thus increasing future sales and profit. Allot more information, some of it sensitive and private information about people and their interests is collected than people are entirely aware of, information is collected and stored and analyzed by market researchers to create their own thoughts about demographics and communities for the company to work on. Information is collected through the obvious and not so obvious ways, lots of information in today's industries is collected without the knowledge of the subjects providing the information, in fact the most useful information is likely to be collected this way because this way the people collecting the data can be sure it is honest and genuine.

Unit 1 Part 62-My Promotional Website for the film "127 Hours" - how its going

For my Web Authoring work I have had to create a flash website for a chosen modern film, I've chosen to promote the film "127 HOURS". I am steadily progressing through the production of the site, learning more and understanding more about flash every day. Using the multi SWF approach I load external flash movies all together with one main movie on the bottom (movie 0). All the others are loaded over the top creating two layers of flash movie.

The site has been divided into four sections, five if you include movie 0, movie 0 is the user interface and links to the other movies that will load over the top of movie 0. The other movies that are linked from the user interface are Cast, Downloads, Gallery and About. So far all the appropriate movies have been created they just have lots of room for improvement and need to be linked up properly. Each of the movies that are loaded up all have their own little tweens that show the personality of the website in its early beginner skilled look.

Once I've finished my website I will link a progress update again and post a link to download the site. Hope you look forward to the next report! :-)

Social Grading - Graded By "National Readership Survey" or "NRS"

The National Readership Survey are an organisation the helps business's and producers establish and specify target audiences. They do this by grading social and communal sects placing them into an order by the ranks in their occupations, classing them by their pay rolls/incomes. Social grade data is very important for industries to recognize and without it can find their sales lost.
The classifications are as follows:
A : Higher managerial, administrative and professional.

B : Intermediate managerial, administrative and professional.

C1 : Supervisory, clerical and junior managerial, administrative and professional.

C2 : Skilled manual workers.

D : Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers.

E : State pensioners, casual and lowest grade workers, unemployed with state benefits only.

The organisation goes out and visits the subjects ranging fifteen years and above, this covers everybody in a chosen set for a particular product, for instance in a particular genre of book may be chosen to decide how popular it is say "detective". Then everyone that can be evaluated will be checked for their enjoyment in detective story's. Lots of qualitative data will be collected and then eventually interpreted into quantitative for the companies to use and if they inquire further they can access qualitative data.

Different products fall into different classifications and quite often more than one or two, for example the "Ferrari" range of products falls directly into the A and B classifications, though many others are just as much likely to appreciate their designs, they do not fall into the bracket that could afford such an expensive product.

Online Flash Game Review -Keyball

As part of my course I am to review Flash structured content, here I am reviewing an online flash game, currently the main use for flash at the moment is actually with online games for everyone who has access to the internet to play for free, but flash is finding more and more use on mobile devices in everyday useful applications.
The online game is "Keyball" and runs very smoothly and offers lots of fun, its strange movement only calls to make the game more fun, sliding around your little character trying to bump rather than kick the ball into the goal. This is essentially a one on one football game where you have an exaggerated bounce of any boundary or any object you come into contact with, sending flying from one side of the pitch to the other.
The game offers computer v person, person v person and computer v computer if your really that into it, three difficulties can be selected from, they are in ascending order "trainer", "Globot" and "Bioman". You also have the options to play between three different match lengths of time- two minute- five minute and eight minute so you don't have to finish your fun too quickly or you don't have to miss too much of the essentials you are learning in the lesson you are pieing. One of the big pros on this game is that it gives an amazing sense of 3D play because your character can rotate right the way round with out the feeling of any frame by frame action. Runs very smoothly and is all in all a very good and fun game and you can comfortably play it with a friend.
If you wish to experience this game you may, just follow this link: http://www.globz.net/globz3/swf/keyball/keyball.swf
Hope you've found this review interesting and hope you enjoy the game if you decide to play it.

Pixar Lamp Tutorial

The outcome of my tutorial lesson!
This video below was produced in Adobe After Effects, it is or was supposed to replicate the original vision of the "Pixar" company ident. With a few tweaks that make it massively different to the original "Pixar" ident my main aim was to produce something new and educational on my part! hope you enjoy :)
